Layer upon Layer

Yet more freezing weather and snow. I know...everyone is talking about it, but what's what we Brits do!

Outfits are getting more and more dull by the day. Just trying to find something that layers, without looking like the Micehlin man is trial enough.

The top outfit is what I decided on today, although I'll probably chuck jeans over the tights if I venture out.

The bottom two are yesterday and the faux fur vest was hastily swapped for a couple of cardigans.

Is anyone actually enjoying this weather? The only upside I can see is it provides the perfect excuse to huddle under a duvet with a hot drink and purring cat.
(And it does make it seem a bit more like Christmas is on its way!)

Care to Dance?

The other big Saturday Night TV series at this time of year is Strictly Come Dancing, I can't say that I'm a massive fan of it myself...I'm an xfactor girl through and through...but someone in this household is...My MUM!

Wonderful jewellery designer Maggie Angus picked up on this and was kind enough to send over one of her Ballroom Dancer necklaces for my Mum.
I was going to put it away so she had something extra to open Christmas Day...but I couldn't wait, and once she clocked it, neither could she!

"Glide gracefully on to the dance floor together with this necklace of a ballroom dancing couple. Taking influence from the glamour of the 1930s plus a nod to Strictly Come Dancing this piece is the epitome of cool. Suitable for all fame hungry starlets"

So perfect, so true!

The necklace came beautifully packaged with a lovely little note, good packaging is important to me and I will make a decision on whether to shop with someone on packaging alone!

Needless to say Mum loves her necklace, and it's got SO MANY compliments!

And Maggie doesn't just do dancers, she has a whole range of illustrated jewellery in her shop...from rings and earrings to necklaces showcasing everything from shoes and bags to animals.

A personal favourite is this hanging cat!

And for the next 24 hours there is 20% off ALL jewellery in the shop, so I suggest you hurry along and snap it up fast!

Layers

Still.So.Cold.
I was not made for winter, not at all. The last few days I've lived in jeans and jumpers which is most unlike me, and by today I had had enough of it and dug around for layers suitable for under dresses. Most of my dresses aren't suitable for winter dressing anymore, no longer loose enough to fit tops under, but...well, I'd rather have them snug than be how I was.

To make tights more weather proof, I added some fabulous leg warmers from Tabio

(sorry the photos are pretty rubbish, I was rushing)

Photobucket

I'm off Christmas shopping with the parents today and I'm hoping this outfit will keep me warm enough.
If it get any colder, I don't know how I'll manage...wear my Slanket in public I guess!

Winter Warmer Wish List

This week's lust list is inspired by the freezing temperatures and smattering of snow we've had dumped on us. We weren't actually predicted any until some time next week but someone clearly forgot to tell the sky that as we had what felt like a mini blizzard (typically, just as I was walking home from somewhere).
Today it's icy, and freezing, and I am not properly equipped. Hence this wishlist.

Photobucket

Earmuffs are something I have shunned in the past, but this year they are calling out to me. I don't *do* hats and my ears are suffering. Could these be the answer? Maybe not, but at only £2.50 from Matalan I'm willing to take a risk.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Animal print faux fur snood and mittens from ASOS. Never before a fan of faux fur right now my entire being is calling out for something warm and toasty...I think these might just hit the spot! I'm also crazy for leopard print, which just furthers the appeal.

Photobucket

There is something about this faux fur shearling coat from F&F at Tesco. Perhaps it's the percieved warmth, or maybe it's the gorgeous cut. Either way it's won my heart this week.

Photobucket

Last but not least is this Antler Ring by Vera Meat at MyFlashTrash. No, it won't keep me warm, but it would be a winter themed addition to my ring collection!

What's on your list this week?

Friday Feeling

Oh look, it's that Cat jumper again. I wasn't kidding when I said I was going to live in it!

Photobucket

Photobucket

And somehow we're at the last Friday in November...how is that even possible? I feel like this year has just sped past and a huge chunk of my life has gone missing.

I hope my USA readers had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I finally got around to painting my nails,
Models Own Grace Green is my new favourite

Photobucket

I've also got a total obsession with rings, the two I never take off are these two

Photobucket

Spinning elephants is a very special one to me. It has a wonderful story behind how it came to be mine.

The Love Bites ring is by Me and Zena and came to me via Spoiled Brat. I love it!

What are your weekend plans? Anything exciting?
I'm not sure what mine are yet, I might be meeting some friends for lunch tomorrow but I need to work out getting there first...
bring on the New Year and re-starting driving lessons!

Outfits

Outfit posts have been thin of the ground this week, partly because I've had other things to post about, and partly because I loathe dressing for winter...especially when last year's baggy warm jumpers are now snug in another way.

But whatever, that's just an excuse for more shopping, right? (All I'm lacking now is the funds!)

Here's what I've been wearing over the last couple of days.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Clothing at Tesco skirt (told you you'd see more of this!), Reindeer cardi from New Look a couple of years back. Thermal, YES thermal long sleeve. We don't have snow here (yet) but it's bloody freezing.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Jumper dress from Next and Over Knee boots from ASOS. I'll end up adding a cardigan or six to this later!

How do you dress for the cold weather?
And where is good for cheap, warm clothes right now?

Mighty Muesli! (a review)

Without a doubt Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For me, it fuels me for the day ahead and means I don't have to worry quite so much about getting enough food later.
I'm a bit of a cereal hoarder, currently in possession of around 10 boxes. I like variety! From the chocolate flavoured kids stuff through to super healthy oats and mueslis, I have something to cater to whatever the morning has thrown at me.

((I don't just have cereal, I also have toast or a bagel)).

Juliette Cattell is the founder of Otter Valley Food Company and the creator of Mighty Muesli. She offered to send me some samples of her range to review, and being the breakfast fiend I am I jumped at the chance.

Before I get in to the review, what IS Mighty Muesli? From Julie herself...

"Back in 1990 my husband was rowing intensively in preparation for a world rowing championship. After his early morning training he was always hungry and trying not to fall asleep during the day. I did a lot of research on super foods and I developed a unique recipe for a breakfast cereal that would provide my husband with the energy and nutrients he needed for his grueling training schedule. The results were that I created MIGHTY MUESLI and my husband won a world championship!

Since that time MIGHTY MUESLI has become the key breakfast fuel for a number of elite sportspeople such as Rebecca Romero, the 2 gold medallist at the Beijing Olympics in cycling and the British Women's rowing team. But MIGHTY MUESLI is not just for champions. Breakfast has long been considered the crucial meal of the day for everyone and it is important to eat the right foods to start you off."

Might Muesli is a blend of whole grains and seeds with a dash of fruit. It contains most of the vitamins and minerals you need on a daily basis, protein to keep you full, fibre, low GI levels, Omegas 3, 6 and 9 as well as containing barely any salt or cholesterol.

None of the products contain wheat or nuts. Also No Hydrogenated fats, no GM ingredients, No Additives; No Chemicals; No Artificial Flavourings; No Dairy; No Trans Fats; No Added Salt.

Here are some of the benefits:

"Higher Energy Levels - MIGHTY MUESLI’S slow releasing carbohydrates will keep you feeling more energetic and more alive.

Look & Feel Healthier- MIGHTY MUESLI is like a big vitamin pill making you look and feel healthier.

Lower Stress Levels and Increased Concentration Levels- MIGHTY MUESLI will help you manage your blood sugar levels, (great for Diabetics too) ironing out the highs and lows, giving you more energy balance, making you less agitated and keeping you focused for longer. It will considerably improve your powers of concentration.

Lose weight – MIGHTY MUESLI leaves you feeling fuller and satisfied for longer; no hunger pangs means you won’t snack between meals. MIGHTY MUESLI contains NO Hydrogenated fats and NO Salt.

Stronger Bones- Everyone needs Vitamin D which is essential for the absorption of calcium in the body. Sunlight assists in the production of Vitamin D and it is also found in a few foods like some oily fish and eggs, but most people don’t get enough so we decided to give you a little extra to start you off - 20% of your RDA*- crucial for women, older people and growing children in particular. (See blog for further information.)

Faster Recovery after Exercise and Maintaining Muscle Condition- If you exercise on a regular basis and you don’t eat properly you will not be able to maintain the quality of your training. You need to eat after exercise to replenish your energy levels and rebuild and maintain muscle condition. Both MIGHTY MUESLI and POWER PORRIDGE can provide you with the right balance of quality complex carbohydrates, protein and fats before and after exercise. If you eat MIGHTY MUESLI after exercise you will not feel as tired during the day, you will have more energy and train better the next time."

Aimed towards Athletes with a view to 2012 and the Olymipcs, Might Muesli has a lot to live up to, so how was it?

First up, the original Mighty Muesli

Photobucket

Photobucket

Attractively packaged, the box shows all the nutritional claims as well as what the mix does and doesn't contain. Although seeming flimsy the cereal had remained fully intact. The back of the box indicates serving size and how much milk to add. The newly revamped recipe contains 20% of you RDA of Vitamin D and has dried cranberries and cherries added for anti-oxidant benefits.

Taste wise, this was great. Despite containing no nuts, this had a nutty taste (which I like in a cereal) from the seeds and grains blend. The dried fruit added a slight sweetness. A good 60g serving contains 212 calories (plus additional from milk) and kept me satisfyingly full all morning.

I was also sent a box of the Gluten Free variety, of which I was more sceptical about. My previous experiences of Gluten Free foods have been dense and somewhat compromised with taste.

Photobucket

Photobucket

This time I ate the muesli with Greek Yoghurt. Texture wise this was more interesting than the original variety with puffs as well as flakes in the mix. Although the recipe states dried apple and apricot were present, I didn't notice it and felt the cereal could benefit from a little more sweetness. This could however be because I didn't shake the box in my haste for breakfast.

The Gluten Free version is Vegan friendly, as well as suitable for those with Gluten Intolerance, Diabetes and IRS.
Despite my hesitations this wasn't at all dense, it seemed to be lighter than the original Might Muesli and lack of sweetness aside, this was my favourite of the two.

A 60g serving of Gluten Free Mighty Muesli contains 235 calories, plus whatever milk or yoghurt you choose to add.

For full nutritional information you can see the website where you can also buy the whole range. It's not the cheapest of cereal at £4.99 for 800g of Might Muesli and £6.99 for the same of the Gluten Free variety,
but if you are an athlete, or simply interested in eating well then I see it as a worthy investment and I shall be placing an order for a larger bag of the Gluten Free variety when my cereal supplies run low.

Juliette also sent POWER PORRIDGE for review...but I am an epic disaster with porridge making so I have passed that along for my grandparents to test. I'll do that review separately.

Also available are "Hunga Busta" Bars, for the perfect on-the-go snack. I'm curious to try these and if I do, I'll report back!

Are you tempted to try this?

Do you always eat breakfast?

What is YOUR favourite cereal?

Monday Blues

Hello, Happy Monday and all that jazz...did you have a good weekend?

Winter is well and truly upon us and I'm struggling to find inspiration for outfits that are WARM. Most of my clothes seem to be of the summer variety, I need more knit wear, long sleeve dresses and trousers!

Today I'm wearing a floral shirt dress from H&M a couple of years back, navy tights and the cutest little socks from Tabio for added warmth!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

I'm really starting to embrace socks with tights as it means I don't always have to rely on long boots! I'm not sure it is the most flattering of looks but I'm pretty much past caring.

Oh, and yesterday I think I out did myself on the crazy tights front!

Photobucket

They made me smile all day!

Have a wonderful start to the week! What's on the agenda?

on my wish list this week

Oh yes, it's Saturday which means it's once again wish list time!

Photobucket

First up is this midi skirt from ASOS. I have so much love for midi skirts right now; the perfect length for winter, really, as maxis (as much as I adore them) do tend to drag in the mud! I wouldn't mind the shoes, either.

Photobucket

This ring by Galibardy has captured my heart. I've actually been planning to treat myself, but it's currently out of stock.

Photobucket

Continuing on the jewellery theme, how cute is this origami necklace by Penny Masquerade at My Flash Trash?

Photobucket

Tabio have captured my heart again with these adorable leg warmers! So cosy, so cute.

Photobucket

And because I am very much a child at heart, I am head over heels for this breakfast set from dotcomgiftshop. ADORABLE.

What's topping your wish list this week?

Just a simple outfit today,
£5 dress from Primark and a cheap black tee + tights.
The ruffles on this dress make me feel super girly, which is never a bad thing.

And another week draws to a close. It's been a testing one this end, and I was to extend a massive thank you to all of you for helping me through it.

What's on your agenda today? I kickstarted mine with some post breakfast yoga (aided by the cat) and shall be catching up with a friend later.

Black&Grey

Today's outfit was hastily thrown on after a fit of
"nothing looks right, or feels right or blaaaaaaah" and a mini tantrum.
Don't you just love those days? Where nothing fits the bill and you find your self wishing you could just burn everything and start afresh?

Photobucket

Photobucket

The skirt and boots are from New Look and the top is from Uniqlo.

What do you do, or wear on days like these?

I also have a little (big) announcement from Matalan, they have just launched their first blog:

"The blog will feature fashion tips and trend advice, plus competitions, exclusive offers, and behind the scenes sneak-peeks at events and fashion shoots. Every Friday we will also be hosting a guest blogger, and for the next few months we have Emma Campbell from http://whatemmadid.com writing for us once a week!"

You can check out the blog HERE

I'd love to hear what you think.

some days

Some days are just made for baggy jeans, a jumper and no make up. Today is one of them.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I was hoping to have another recipe to share with you today, as I attempted a new recipe for orange curd cupcakes.
One word. FAIL
(lets just hope that doesn't continue to be the theme of the day)

((looking out and the weather, it might just be))

ginger cake recipe

As a follow on to yesterday's post, here is the recipe for the ginger cake, from Tesco website.

Ingredients:

175 g butter
175 g soft brown sugar
175 g golden syrup
200 ml milk
2 eggs, whisked
325 g self-raising flour
2 tsp ground ginger
1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

(you could also try adding stem ginger, or crystallized ginger for an added kick, or maybe some dried fruit)

Method:

1.Heat oven to Gas 2, 150°C, 300°F. Butter and line a 1kg (2lb) loaf tin with baking paper.
2.Melt butter, sugar and syrup in a pan on a low heat, mix so that the sugar has melted into the butter and syrup. remove from the heat, add the milk and blend until smooth, add the eggs and mix in. Finally fold in the flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda, pour into the prepared loaf tin.
3.Bake for 1 hour, then cover with baking paper and bake for another 30 minutes. To check that the cake is cooked insert a knife into the middle and it should come out clean.
4.Remove cake from the oven and leave for 5 minutes, then turn out of the baking tin and cool. If possible, wrap cake in greaseproof paper and leave it in a tin to enrich for a week as it improves with age.

(Personally, I prefer the cake straight from the oven)

(points in italics are my additions)

I'm planning to make one and ice in instead of a Christmas cake this year.

dotcomchristmas

As much as we might be trying to deny the fact that Christmas is on the way, truth is there are only 39 days to go.
Dotcomgiftshop has long been a go-to place for buying Christmas gifts, with their fantastic range of unique and often vintage style wares to suit every one and every budget.

When they got in touch with me a couple of weeks ago offering to send me some cake tins I was delighted. You know I love baking. And I needed new tins. And I love dotcomgiftshop. It would have been downright stupid to say no. Right?

I've been saving writing this post until I'd had a chance to bake something to go in the tins

(here)

Today I finally had a chance, and whipped up a ginger cake to pop inside.

These tins, at £35 might not be cheap but what I really love is that you can use just one of them, or two, or all three. They also look pretty without being gaudy (as a lot of the tins I'd seen in shops were) and have the vintage feel that I love.

I don't think the cake is going to last very long in the tin. It's SO good. I had some whilst it was still warm from the oven. Delicious!

Check out dotcomgiftshop and their extensive selection of gifts for all. There are new arrivals every week, as well as special offers and extensive gift guides to help you find your perfect present.

What is your favourite piece from the site?

This is going on my wish list!

Bonus, random outfit photo from first thing this morning when a bleary eyed Mum played photographer.
